Right now there are two species I am particularly interested in collecting. You are all familiar with the bald-faced or white-faced hornets. There are also a variety of yellow jackets that the Lab needs. Here is an easy guide for identify these types of pests. They both make a ball shaped nest! I have seen these nests as small as a peanut and as large as three basketballs put together. You will find these nests in all kinds of places. I've seen them plastered on the sides of houses, under eves, in bushes or trees and sometimes underneath your decks. Please contact us if you find any ball shaped nests. Here's a word of advice for those who trim hedges and bushes. Before you plunge in and start trimming, wait a moment and observe if there is any activity coming in and out of the bush. A moment of observation can save you some very painful stings. Lawn care people are particularly vulnerable to getting stung this way because they have to do their job quickly. Please take a moment and look. I do have a few people around the State of Connecticut who are letting the yellow jacket or hornet nest grow. I recommend this only if the nest is in a location where people or animals will not accidentally bump it. I will collect any size nest. Little is better than none. Contact us for any size nest. In the fall the yellow jackets that make a ball nest will be gone so I need to get as many as I can while the season is here. The white-faced hornet nest will keep growing through September and will become quite large. Also during August and September the other varieties of yellow jacket nests will be growing. These varieties will be in the ground or coming out of a crack in your house. |
